Why TIB is challenging the definition of beauty
Did you know that one of the Oxford Dictionary’s accepted definitions of beauty is:
noun
2. a beautiful woman.
“She was considered a great beauty in her youth”
But… wait… what exactly is a beautiful woman? Why was she only considered beautiful in her youth? Why not now? What does it mean to be beautiful? Why just a woman? Why not a man? Why not Donnatella, the drag queen from Skegness? Why not the post glow feels after a workout?
So. many. questions.
And, herein lies our endless dilemma. The saga. The one, true, undefinable conundrum that modern woman face from the day they’re born...
What does it really mean to be beautiful?
And, is that all I’m good for?
Well, we’re here to shake things up a bit...
To challenge the notion that beauty is even a noun...
Maybe it’s a verb. Maybe it’s an adjective. Maybe it’s a wilting flower in a forgotten vase. Maybe it’s the ketchup stain on your favourite blouse that you refuse to throw away. Maybe it’s the feeling you get when your boss says, “cancel that meeting, I’m going to send you an email instead” at 2.30pm on a Friday. Maybe it’s wearing the Russian red lipstick just to go to the corner store. Maybe it’s the pyjama bottoms and pizza when you drank one too many hard seltzers last night.
Maybe it’s all of these things and maybe it’s none of these things. And maybe that’s ok.
Maybe YOU get to decide what beauty means to you.
(Radical, we know).
If you resonate with any of that, even a little bit. You made it.
Welcome to This Is Beauty - but you can call us TIB for short. We’re cute like that.
So, back to this definition of “beauty”.
How is it possible to define something that means and feels different to, quite literally, every single individual human being on this planet?
It’s makeup and no make up.
Its drinking a green smoothie for breakfast M-F after spin class and downing margaritas until the early hours of Sunday morning.
It’s a social media hiatus and posting a selfie.
To a surfer, it’s the perfect wave.
To a photographer, it’s that early morning light.
To a new mother, it’s the smell on the back of a little chubby neck.
It all depends on who you’re talking to. So, why let someone else define what beauty means?
Let’s not forget that beauty is HUMAN. We made it up. We made up the word. We can make up what it means, too.
We’re tired of the rules. We’re tired of the uniforms. We’re tired of just a handful of people setting the standard for what beauty means or should mean for everyone, everywhere. Worldwide.
Take that, Oxford Dictionary!
So, that’s why we decided to challenge this definition and do things a little different at TIB...
We believe beauty is not just a look. It's a feeling, it’s an ownership, it’s an identity, it's a mindset AND it’s deeply, deeply personal. It’s no secret that what beauty is to one is completely different to another. We also believe that overall beauty can be composed of many different things…
Is beauty a 10 step face cleansing routine after a heavy weekend of partying? Great. Or is it a bare face and a pile of hair on top of your head? Fabulous.
Do you like watching make-up tutorials by Vogue AND Nat Geo documentaries about how to save the planet? Us, too (let’s be friends?)
Beauty is simply living as the beautiful, wildly contradictory, but magical and messy things that we are. And letting ourselves be all of it.
We’re here to explore a wide spectrum of topics and start conversations that add to the sprawling tapestry of what beauty actually means to you.
From the latest and greatest products that promise to boost your confidence, to examining mind-bending neuroscience research that might help you, quite literally, change your mind about… well everything. To talking with people who are changing our perception of what it really means to be beautiful, we’re here to elevate your every day and make you feel empowered, uplifted and confident all through the lens of THIS being beauty. Your beauty.
And we’re here to tell you that beauty is YOURS to define.
This is our formula:
Look good + Feel good + Do good = This is Beauty.
So, there you have it. This is TIB. And TIB is a movement.
Are you in?
